Show title: 10s across the board
When I tell you that I have been waiting like totally forever for this, it would be a huge understatement. The brand new season of Rupaul’s Drag Race has begun and to mark the show’s tenth anniversary, Ru has pulled out all the stops to celebrate in style. If you read my previous blog introducing this year’s line-up you will already know that these are some of the most glamorous queens we have seen to date. The first episode really gave me a good idea of my potential favourites but I could also tell that some of them would annoy the hell out of me. For example, I already knew that I disliked Eureka from last season as I think she is far too rude and obnoxious but I guess that’s just a matter of opinion.
But anyway let’s get down to it. The show opens with our queens getting thrown straight into the deep end. Several of the show’s royalty have turned up yet again to witness our new queens work the runway. Whoever stands out from the crowd will win the task and whoever fails to sissy that walk will end up in the bottom two. I was LIVING for this challenge as it literally gave me Paris is burning realness. The whole atmosphere was buzzing just like an old school drag ball. What a fantastic was to mark the show’s tenth birthday! The winner of the challenge was Monét X Change, who really surprised me with her moves. She is a real contender in my eyes now.
The main challenge this week was a reenactment of a past challenge. The queens were asked to construct an outfit made of miscelleneous items that would be found at a dollar store. There were some very innovative looks on the runway but there were also some rather tragic outfits too. The winner was a very grateful and tearful Mayhem Miller (whose drag family includes such names as Delta Work, Detox and Raven) and has actually tried out for the show every single year since season one but has been rejected time after time. It was only natural that the win would be a big deal for her in particular.
There was a huge twist this episode as Rupaul suddenly announced that another queen would be joining the girls. The girls were shocked as Rupaul announced that Farramoan would be returning and then out popped Christina Aguilera! My jaw literally dropped…
The two who failed to impress in the shows opening however were Vanessa Vanjie Mateo and Kalorie Karbdashian-Williams. The two went head to head in a lip-sync-for-your-life to Aguilera’s Aint No Other Man. Mateo sadly didn’t quite come out on top and was the first queen to sashay away. I didn’t quite agree with rupaul on this. I personally liked her banjee attitude and would have liked to see what she pulled out the bag next week.
So there you have it kitty girls… hope you all enjoyed this years premiere extravaganza! I’m gagging to see what will happen next week!
