Homosexuality in this day and age is more accepted than ever before. Here in western civilisation we have turned milestones that none of our ancestors would have foreseen. This is demonstrated by our ever changing laws and attitudes on LGBTQ issues that activists fight for so passionately and tirelessly every single day. These guys really have paved the way for future generations to feel comfortable and secure to step forward into adulthood knowing that they have the right to be who they are and love who they love regardless of gender. Yes, I understand that we as gay people are still not viewed as equals in many cultures around the world and for that I am ashamed. But without these pioneers who work tirelessly to break down these barriers, I don’t think we would have overcome half the uphill battle that we have done. For that very reason, my pride, love and respect goes out to all those people who are defending me and my rights without even knowing me. To those activists who educate the masses, I say thank you.
Since coming out in an interview on ESPN, British-born olympic skier Gus Kenworthy has become an icon for gay people and regularly speaks out about issues concerning LGBT rights in the media. As one of only two openly gay men competing in this years Olympics, the other being figure skater Adam Rippon, he really is destroying stereotypes and inspiring a generation of aspiring gay athletes. In a recent interview with Ellen Degeneres the athlete expresses views on VP of the United States Mike Pence. As leader of U.S delegation at Olympics, Gus believes that he is an unworthy choice given the fact that he has a history of homophobic behaviour and was actually supportive of a constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality back in 2006. Watch interview here.
When I read about a new story like this one, it really does warm my heart and remind me that some people do care. I absolutely agree with Kenworthy. To have someone leading the delegation that has directly attacked the LGBT community, it directly contradicts all the values that the Olympics represent and sets an all round bad example in today’s society. Kenworthy describes how “the Olympics is all about inclusion and people coming together”. How can this be achieved if the values of someone so high in its hierarchy directly oppose it?
The skier has recently been causing a stir on twitter too as he received some less than welcome comments on the photo below:
The controversy arose after Gus tweeted a photo of himself and boyfriend, actor Matthew Wilkas, sharing a kiss live on television at the Olympics. We all know that the twitter sphere can be a rather…well unforgiving place so naturally the hate comments started to appear. What makes me laugh is how the athlete responded to one tweet in particular:
Take that John Dowd! That is how you put a shady b*tch in their place. I almost clapped when I read this reply. #hopefullynotyou
