What a sensational snatch… game! That’s right, the All Star edition of the legendary game which everyone anticipates each season took place on Thursday and our queens pulled out all the stops to put on their best performance. But not all impressed in their tributes to their chosen celebs as you will soon find out as we take a look back at the episode in closer detail.
Firstly, I must address this as I find myself scratching my head every time it comes to light. Why is it that we are on All Stars 3 and some queens still don’t understand that the main objective to this challenge is to make Ru laugh. Too many girls prioritise their look and then fail miserably when it comes to putting on a performance. I would understand if they weren’t warned but after nine seasons of Ru repeating the phrase ‘make me laugh’, you would think they’d have got the message by now.
But anyway not to dwell on the negative, let’s get down to it; here’s a run down of each queen and who they impersonated…
Bebe Zahara Benet- Grace Jones
Not a very good Grace Jones in my opinion. I wouldn’t say Bebe was the worst but she was certainly by no means the best. To give her some credit, she is the only All Star not to have done snatch game in her season.
Trixie mattel- Rupaul
It is a very sad situation because we were all rooting for Trixie to do well in this challenge and personally I was expecting a lot more to her snatch than she let off. First things first, nobody can do Rupaul better than Rupaul so she was pretty much doomed from the get go. I won’t lie, she did start off very funny indeed but it became very clear rather quickly that she was a one trick pony- relying on her available on iTunes gag. It was funny once darling but dear god spare me the repetitions. The spat with Shangela in the werkroom could have damaged her confidence slightly. Whether it played a part in her demise, I guess is open to debate. Her performance however didn’t impress and she ended up in the bottom three. Sorry bout’ it girl.
Aja- Crystal Labeija
Aja’s choice of snatch game was rather risky as I can’t imagine many people have heard of Crystal Labeija. It was so impressive to see a young queen like Aja portraying such an icon in drag. She absolutely nailed it for me and showed an uncanny resemblance. If you haven’t heard of Crystal, I advise you to go and watch the YouTube clip of the star as she read everyone in her vicinity to filth after being placed THIRD runner-up (oh the shame darling) in a beauty pageant back in 1967. It will leave you in hysterics.
Kennedy Davenport- Phaedra Parks
Now I love Kennedy Davenport and I was really excited to see who she was going to do but this was a bit of a miss for me. Anyone who has ever seen The Real Housewives of Atlanta knows that Phaedra is the shadiest hoe ever. She could have really made that character funny but chose to instead focus on the sweet, church-girl side to her which isn’t so comedic. The performance landed her in the bottom three which I’m sorry to say didn’t surprise me.
BenDeLaCreme- Paul Lynde
Let me start by saying that this queen certainly has the nerve to do what the other queens have always feared in the history of Drag Race-playing a boy in the snatch game. I must also admit that I had never heard of Paul Lynde before. But to be honest BenDeLaCreme was so funny that I didn’t care. Let’s not forget the main objective of this whole game is to make Rupaul laugh and boy did she succeed in that. The comedic queen impressed Rupaul yet again and landed in the top two against Shangela.
Shangela- Jenifer ‘Mutha F***in’ Lewis
As Shangela is a complete natural extrovert, I wasn’t surprised that she embodied Jennifer Lewis perfectly. The two could could easily be sisters. Then again Shangela could play Dora The Explorer in the snatch game and be memorable. This is why she is a real contender this season and the other queens all know it.
Anyway her marvellous portrayal landed her in the top two with BenDeLaCreme and the two partook in the raunchiest lip-sync-for-your-legacy I’ve ever seen. The two got down and dirty as they lip-synced to Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl. The performance was so jaw dropping Rupaul pronounced them both winners. Condragulations Girls! The pair got to split the $10,000 equally, but also left them both with the decision to eliminate two of the bottom three. Yikes!
As I fully expected from viewing the one-on-ones, Ben opted for Chi Chi DeVayne to get the axe. Well she basically asked her to.
To my shock however, Shangela also chose Chi Chi to leave the competition, sparing Trixie and Kennedy to go onto the next round.
Let me jut explain my surprise at Shangela’s decision. It was due to the obvious fact of her earlier dispute with Trixie about a farewell message displayed on the wall from Thorgy Thor. It partly said in the corner of the page: “F*ck that shady b*tch Shangela”. Trixie claims she did not read nor notice the shady part of Thorgy’s message (yeah right) and so put it up obliviously. If you ask me, Shangela had every right to be offended and I fully expected her to send her ass home… but thats just me.
So yes, guys, Ms DeVayne is the next All Star to sashay away. It was pretty clear that she was out of her depth this season as she just couldn’t get past her own defeatist attitude. Her Maya Angelou snatch game was not well thought out or planned which was clear from the start. She couldn’t even spell her name! Taking this into account, the girls’ decision was justified and I respect Shangela more now for making her decision based on logic.
Thanks, Y’all. Bieeeee.
